Who Stands for Planned Parenthood?

The past couple years have been rough for Planned Parenthood. As Congress ushered in Health Care Reform, we have seen definite losses to women’s health care rights. In 2010, the leadership in the House of Representatives shifted to Republican and Republicans increased in number in the Senate. The very conservative Tea Party became a large voice in this new Republican Party and are outspoken opponent’s of women’s health rights.

Nationally, 89 new laws were enacted in 2010 that affect reproductive health care rights. Of these, 39 of them in 15 different states pertain to abortion. Fourteen states introduced measures to restrict insurance coverage of abortion.

In 2011, 162 new provisions were introduced and 49% of those restricted access to abortion. Five states restricted funding to family planning providers.

Arizona passed five new laws further restricting abortion that effectively required Planned Parenthood to cease abortion services at seven of its health centers. Women living in rural areas will be the most adversely affected by these new restrictions.  Continue reading

Time to Mobilize to Protect Women’s Health

Thanks to everyone who attended the Roe v. Wade Happy Hour on Friday, January 21st. We had a great turnout at the Javalina Cantina on Friday, including State Senator Linda Lopez. Senator Lopez addressed the crowd, telling us that we face a difficult environment in the state legislature for women’s health. But now is not the time to retreat; now is the time to mobilize to protect women’s health.

You can stand up for women’s health by signing up for Women’s Health Lobby Day. We will be meeting with our state representatives and addressing pending legislation that will impact women’s health in the state of Arizona. This is a great opportunity to learn how our state government works, as well as to meet other pro-choice advocates from around the state.

Follow us on Twitter to stay up to date on the latest action alerts. And if you haven’t already signed up to volunteer with Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona, send us an e-mail to find out when the next volunteer training will be. We’d love to have you join our fabulous Community Action Team.

Thanks again to everyone for celebrating Roe with us on Friday. We can’t wait to see you at Women’s Health Lobby Day, and other events in the future!

This year marks the 38th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision, which recognizes a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions. Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona invites you to join us for our annual Roe v. Wade anniversary luncheon.

The Tucson luncheon is on Thursday, February 17, at the Doubletree Hotel. Our emcee will be David Fitzsimmons, of the Arizona Daily Star. We will be honoring Patti Caldwell, formerly the executive director of Planned Parenthood of Southern Arizona, for her years of service. We are very excited to be featuring Amy Allina as the keynote speaker at the Tucson luncheon. Ms. Allina is the Program Director of the National Women’s Health Network (NWHN). Amy is also a founding coordinator of Raising Women’s Voices for the Health Care We Need, a national initiative working to make sure women’s voices are heard and women’s concerns are addressed as policymakers put the new health reform law into action. Planned Parenthood’s Thoughts and Prayers Are with Rep. Giffords

PPAA volunteers, Cheryl Cage, and Nancy Young Wright with Rep. Gabrielle Giffords during 2010 campaign season

Statement from Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Bryan Howard, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Arizona, on shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords:

“The thoughts, wishes, and prayers of the entire Planned Parenthood family are with Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona and all of the victims of the tragic shooting incident in Tucson, Arizona on Saturday. Congresswoman Giffords is an invaluable and indefatigable advocate and public servant whom we respect for her courageous leadership on behalf of the people of Arizona and women everywhere. She is a fearless champion of health care for all Americans, and she played a vital role in the passage of the most important health care legislation in our nation’s history. She is a close friend of Planned Parenthood, and our staff and supporters in Arizona and across the country fervently hope for her recovery. We mourn all who were killed in this tragedy, and we will keep their families in our thoughts and prayers.”

Please feel free to leave your wishes for Rep. Giffords in the comments section.
