Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona Needs YOU at the Capitol Tomorrow Morning!

Tomorrow, Wednesday, February 15, legislative committees in the House and the Senate will hear three bills that cut family planning funding to low-income Arizonans, restrict women’s access to abortion care, and force doctors to promote crisis pregnancy centers. We need Planned Parenthood supporters and/or patients who are willing to testify, and also people willing to be in the gallery wearing their pink T-shirts if you are not comfortable testifying. Can you be there? These committee hearings will be going on all morning until at least noon, so even if you can come for an hour, your support is needed and much appreciated!!

Below are short breakdowns of the bills, and the times and locations of the committee hearings. Please email for further information or to RSVP. We will provide you with the materials to be able to testify.

1.       House Bill 2838 bans abortions at 20 weeks or more, even if there is a lethal fetal anomaly. While supporters of this bill claim HB2838 will protect women and keep them safe, we know the real reason for this bill: to prevent women from accessing abortion care altogether and continue to take away our right to choose what is right for us and our own futures. This bill is being heard at 8:15 a.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, February 15, at the House of Representatives.

2.       House Bill 2800 will have a devastating effect on women’s health care in Arizona.  This bill effectively prohibits Planned Parenthood from providing family planning services including life-saving cancer screenings, birth control, and basic health care via AHCCCS and Title X.  Research has shown that 78 percent of Arizonans support public funding for family planning services. For every $1 the state invests in family planning programs for low-income women Arizona taxpayers save $4 in Medicaid costs associated with unintended pregnancies. Arizona can’t afford to lose this funding that our friends and neighbors rely on to plan their futures! This bill is being heard at 8:15 a.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, February 15, at the House of Representatives.

3.       Senate Bill 1494 does not focus on the safety of women, or keep their best interests at heart. Instead of focusing on the real concerns of Arizonans — jobs and the economy — our lawmakers are pushing a bill that would force doctors to provide ideological misinformation to patients. Senate Bill 1494 would force doctors to tell a woman that the abortion will terminate the life of a whole, separate, unique, living human being and offer crisis pregnancy centers as a safe and credible alternative to abortion care. CPCs are unlicensed, unaccredited, and unregulated. In fact, numerous studies have shown that crisis pregnancy centers give women false, ideologically driven information. In the Waxman Report, a study commissioned by Congress, investigators found that 87 percent of crisis pregnancy centers contacted by investigators gave false or misleading information about abortion. This bill is being heard at 9 a.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, February 15, at the Senate.

A Look Into the Face of Planned Parenthood

Editor’s Note: Today’s post is from Leslie Levy, one of our fabulous Community Action Team volunteers.

When I was single, I spent the third decade of my life working for a traveling healthcare company. I would spend months at a time in different cities across the United States working as an Occupational Therapist. This was in the 1990s to be exact. I was always conscientious about Pap tests, and mammograms. And, as a traveler, I would often get caught out on assignment at a time when my annual physical exams were due.

What’s a woman to do in a case like this? Go to the local Planned Parenthood, of course. Go to their medical office where you can get wellness checks, along with meeting some fantastic people at the same time. I used Planned Parenthood for my annual wellness checks for 10 years. I was so grateful that there was a place where a young woman on her own could find healthcare.

A woman’s wellness checks are intimate and can often be embarrassing. You don’t want to talk about your reproductive choices, have your boobs fondled, and spread your legs for just any doctor you find in the yellow pages. And, as a woman, you can’t trust any doctor you find in the yellow pages. You need a doctor who is trained to give you all the information and care you are supposed to have. Continue reading

An Internship With a Purpose

Editor’s Note: Today’s post is by one of PPAZ’s interns, Cassidy Olson. Cassidy is an Arizona native who was born and raised in Prescott. She is currently studying public relations at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and will be graduating in December. Cassidy has been interned in the communications and marketing department at Planned Parenthood Arizona, December 2010 through May 2011.

My internship in the communication and marketing department at Planned Parenthood Arizona (PPAZ) came about really by happenstance; however, it turned into something greater than I could have expected. As a member of Arizona State University’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), I participated in an event called “Shadow Day.” During Shadow Day, each PRSSA member was matched with a business in Phoenix to visit for a day to learn how the public relations department at each organization functioned. I had always been interested in the nonprofit side of public relations, so when I found out that I had been matched with PPAZ for the day, I was eager to learn more about nonprofit PR for a couple of hours. Never had I expected my short visit would turn into an internship lasting five months.

When I met Cynde Cerf, communication and marketing manager at PPAZ, I was in awe of the fact that she was able to manage the entire PPAZ communication department by herself. Because of this, when Cynde mentioned she was on the look-out for interns, I thought it might be a fun opportunity to learn a few things and help out. In all reality, the internship did much more than that for me. Continue reading

Can You Be Pro-Choice and Catholic?

Have you ever heard or have you been told

  • “You can’t be pro-choice and Catholic.”
  • “Life begins at conception.”
  • “You have excommunicated yourselves.”

The truth is, you can be pro-choice and Catholic – and indeed, most Catholics are. Catholics can, in good conscience, support access to abortion and affirm that abortion can be a moral choice.

Join us for an interactive workshop with staff from Catholics for Choice to learn the truth about Catholics, Catholic teaching, and abortion. Pro-Choice Catholicism 101: Listening to Your Conscience will outline how it is possible to be both pro-choice and Catholic – and how the vast majority of Catholics support comprehensive reproductive healthcare services.  Continue reading

ACT NOW – More Attacks on Planned Parenthood in Arizona

WE NEED YOU TO TAKE ACTION on BOTH ITEMS below:
TAKE ACTION on SB1390
TAKE ACTION on HB2384

You wouldn’t believe what we’re seeing in the Arizona Legislature. Anti-choice legislators have launched one of the most shocking attacks on women’s health we’ve ever seen. Last Wednesday easily could have been dubbed “Anti-Woman Day” at the Arizona Legislature. Several anti-choice bills were voted on in two committees that day, including two resolution bills, HCR2034 and SCR1017, which have the singular purpose of singing the praises of deceptive Crisis Pregnancy Centers, as well as three of the other anti-woman bills we alerted you to last week, SB1246 (the bill that redefines taking a pill as a surgical abortion), HB2443 (Abortion; Sex and Race Selection; Prohibition) and SB1265 (Tax Credit Ban on Planned Parenthood). Despite all of your emails last week, all of these bills passed out of their committees.

Take a moment and view the hearings on these bills; you will be shocked! Our legislators hear the truth about how these bills will hurt women AND VOTE FOR THEM ANYWAY! They need to hear from you!  Continue reading
